Hello angler’s, it’s been awhile since our last repost but some important news to tell. The Malihini is back on the water after her annual maintenance, some fresh paint and USCG inspection. You most likely heard by now of the $30 per angler Mexico Visa requirement for fishing in Mexico which means the popular Coronado Islands. This issue is still being debated so please check back frequently for the latest update.

Malihini will fish regardless whether in USA or Mexico. There is good fishing this time of year in both Mexico or USA, just different species targeted respecting the USA Rockcod moratorium until March 1, 2012. Feel free to call with any questions at 619-985-5179 or to book your group or company charter. There are prime dates available for private charter and open party trips.

Get in on the contest going on from January 23, 2012 to April 14, 2012! Every time you fish on the Malihini 3/4 day or Premier half-day, you will be entered into a drawing for some great prizes. http://www.malihinisportfishing.com for complete details.

Some species being caught lately are Calico Bass, Sand Bass, Perch, Croaker, Sculpin and some nice Halibut fishing this time of year. There is also a plethora of catch and release species until the March 1, 2012 opening day for groundfish.

The Malihini is scheduled to depart daily at 6am from H&M Landing. Please come down or call and make that reservation or book online if you prefer by clicking the link at the top of this page and book your trip today or group charter. Grab a friend or family member and make that reservation and get out on the water for the day in awesome San Diego weather. To make your reservation you can go to the online booking tab here on the boat web site or call the landing and book that way 619-222-1144

Spoke with Captain/Owner Bill Wilkerson of the 3/4 day Malihini with an awesome day on the water today fishing the Coronado Island’s just across the USA/Baja, Mexico Border. The latest buzz on the bite continues to be a real nice Sand Bass bite. When the Yellowtail and other gamefish aren’t on the chew a nice big and tastey grumpy Sandbass and Calico Bass make for some great taco’s and both species can reach upward of 6 – 10 pounds! Here’s Sunday’s fish count:

ANGLERS: 38
FISH: BARRACUDA: 3 (these fish get big and put up a good fight!) Sandbass: 140 Calico Bass: 6 Conditions and season is here for the Yellow’s (Yellowtail) and possibly even a show of Bluefin Tuna (this time of year although they are not specifically targeted it’s not uncommon to see or catch. You really need to be prepared however and experienced fishing tuna should they make a rare show and have at least a 40lb setup ready to go. Leave the lake spinning rods home as these fish break lighter tackle. No offense I just like to suggest the best possible shot at catching a nice game fish should they show.

There’s a nice mix of fish right now during San Diego’s peak season with the widest variety of fish being targeted and chance at catching.

The ticket prices for these trips are $95.00 for adults and 85.00 for juniors & seniors per person and they include your Mexican fishing permit. …hope to see you folks on the fishing grounds with us. ALWAYS ask about any last minute fuel surcharge when fuel is at or near $4.00/Gallon.

This is Rob with SportfishSanDiego.com with the Malihini sportfishing report and fish counts for Sunday, June 26, 2011. Good signs of Yellowtail today finally with 2 hooked fish. Lets hope with this stable nice weather and flat seas at the Coronado Islands the Yellow’s will fill the sacks in days to come. This is also the time of year the Bluefin start showing up at the Island’s so it’s not a bad idea to take a 30-40# setup should these fish show up. Always come prepared when fishing a 3/4 day at the Coronado Island’s this time of year when the exotics are targeted or caught. Here’s today’s fish counts from Owner/Captain Bill Wilkerson:

ANGLERS: 31
FISH: BARRACUDA: 43 Yellowtail: 2 Sandbass: 1 Sculpin: 94 Rockfish: 13 Calico Bass: 1

The Malihini is scheduled to depart daily at 6am from H&M Landing. We will fish with at least 8-11 anglers. Grab a friend or family member and make that reservation and get out on the water for the day in awesome San Diego weather.

The ticket prices for these trips are $95.00 for adults and 85.00 for juniors & seniors per person and they include your Mexican fishing permit. …hope to see you folks on the fishing grounds with us. Please be sure to ask about any fuel surcharge with the current fuel costs hitting over $4.00/Gal.

I just got a call from Captain/Owner Bill Wilkerson of the 3/4 day Malihini with an awesome mix of surface and groundfish fishing. The big news of the day is a nice 50lb. White Sea Bass and a 31lb. Yellowtail (typical big gamefish for this time of year). Also worthy of mention was equally as good bottom fishing with 45 Rockfish. Here’s the day’s fish count:

ANGLERS: 31
FISH: BARRACUDA: (LIMITS) Yellowtail: 1 (Beautiful 31lb. fish) White Seabass: 1 (50lbs!)

The Malihini is scheduled to depart daily at 6am from H&M Landing if there are enough fishermen to leave the dock. We will fish with at least 8-11 anglers. The problem this time of year isn’t typically bad weather or poor fishing – it’s from a lack of fishermen so please come down and book your trip today or group charter. Grab a friend or family member and make that reservation and get out on the water for the day in awesome San Diego weather. Loads are lighter this time of year and the Cod fishing has been excellent.

We have not been reporting because there has not been anything to report of significance. We have been getting out and catching rock fish and it’s been good, with a few days of barracuda. Today there has been something to really talk about. Capt. Mike found some yellowtail that wanted to bite a little bit. I wish I could say that this is the way its gong to be for the rest of the year. But the minute i say that I am proven wrong. I don’t want to sound like it’s not going to be sustainable, we are looking for folks that want to go fishing and catch fish. We target what’s biting. The reports the past few days are as follows

05-23-2011 3/4 Day 17 anglers 18 Kelp Bass, 34 Rockfish, 10 California Yellowtail

05-22-2011 3/4 Day 13 anglers 32 Vermilion Rockfish, 15 Boccaccio, 34 Rockfish

05-21-2011 3/4 Day 21 anglers 1 Barred Sand Bass, 2 Kelp Bass, 101 Rockfish

05-19-2011 3/4 Day 14 anglers 107 Rockfish, 28 California Barracuda, 1 Kelp Bass

05-15-2011 3/4 Day 16 anglers 100 Rockfish, 1 Kelp Bass

Once again I am apologizing for not reporting everyday it just been a hectic couple of weeks for us here at malihini sport fishing. We have seen excellent signal as far as he yellow tail goes with hooking them but not landing them. The water is clean and it looks like they are starting to acclimated to structure, That is a good thing. I would suggest a rig for the surface, and a rig for the yoyo. the bait fisherman we still have a chance, as i am a bait fisherman my self. Suggested set up for the surface would 9-10 foot stick with 40 pound test line we use maxima line on the malihini and you r favorite tady 45 or candy bar also made by tardy. For the yoyo fisherman i would suggest a Tady A2 Yoyo Iron or something like that. We have been seeing a lot of fish the past couple of weeks. it looks like they are starting to bite for us a little bit, and that’s a good thing. the counts for the past few days are as follows

04-22-2011 3/4 Day 31anglers 97 Rockfish, 1 Lingcod, 6 California Yellowtail
04-21-2011 3/4 Day 19 anglers 118 Rockfish
04-20-2011 3/4 Day 26 anglers 1 Barred Sand Bass, 95 Rockfish, 1 Lingcod, 2 Kelp Bass
04-19-2011 3/4 Day 20 anglers 40 Rockfish
04-17-2011 3/4 Day 37 anglers 50 Rockfish, 3 California Yellowtail

and a special shout to the won anglers that came out on the 17th of this month hope you guys really enjoyed your selfs we got our chance very late in the day. but they finally showed there faces. Randy Lovejoy won the jack pot and a brand new peen reel from penn, and to Charlie Iwashita its all ways a pleasure fishing you.

Hey all

Just to give you a up date of the past couple of months. I know we have not been up to date with our postings but that’s going to change. We have in the past couple of days have seen yellowtail breezing around; it looks like it the first batch of fish this spring. This has the same feel as 2006 when the yellow tail at the islands,WENT OFF !!!!! as my partner owner operator capt mike Schmidt says he experienced, we hope it holds true. With that being said
The past three weeks have been really good on the rock fishing with almost limits when we get off the dock. The problem this time of year is not the lack of fish it’s the lack of anglers. We need at least 10 anglers to leave the dock
The price is 95.00 dollars for adults and 85.00 for juniors seniors.. Remember if you have your own Mexican permit you pay less. Like I said the yellow are here and putting on a nice showing. The counts for the past couple of weeks are as follows

04/05/2011
15 anglers they combined for 40 rock fish

04/03/2011
21 anglers 74 rock fish

04/01/2011
15 anglers and they combined for 2 sheep head 110 rock fish and 37 reds and one ling cod

03/30/2011
18 anglers they combined for 110 rock fish 67 reds 3 sheep heads

03/28/2011

12 anglers they combined for 79 rock fish

with the yellow tail showing up. We think it only going to get better. So those of you that have companies give us a call. We still have some prime charter dates available give me a call 619-985-5179 and let’s talk charter for your group….. Look forward to see you all on the water….

Like I said things seem to be improving
