Sportfishing San Diego 3/4 Day – Malihini Fish Counts

Here’s the sportfishing report for Thursday, May 16 2013

31 Anglers/1 Boat: 25 Yellowtail, 39 Rockfish, 14 Barracuda

If you have a jig stick for deep yo-yo and surface fish take it. The Yellowtail this time of year can be bruiser size and a lot are busting off each trip. A 30-40# jig stick is a good choice for landing the explosive-fighting Yellowtail. Also this setup is good should Bluefin Tuna show in coming weeks as we’ve seen the past few years.

Calico Bass have been on the chew as well with a lot of shorts released. A light rig 15-20lb test for casting live bait or plastic swim baits works best. The rental boat rods are fine.

The Yellowtail are on the chew. to make reservations click the book online link above or call h&m landing office at 619-222-1144

Yellowtail back on Malihini 3/4 Day!! Weather Settled Down Some Today

Hello again anglers, Owner/Captain William asked me to post for today’s day targeting Yellowtail. The Malihini landed 12 Yellowtail as of 2PM today. The fish are there and are very big as common this time of year with the 18-25lb “home guard” or “mossback” class fish.

The suggested setup targeting these big fish is nothing less than a 40 pound “yo-yo” rig . (heavy iron jig for sinking deep and fast retrieve repeated) Bill says if I you guys plan on making a trip he suggests you make those reservations as soon as possible it seems like things are starting to pick up and we will be running full here. There are three ways you can make a reservation, you can call HM landing at 619-222-1144 or go to HM landing.com make your reservation that way or right after you check the report you can click on the online booking tab at the top of the page make your reservation via our website that would be malihinisportfishing.com. Just a reminder April 27, 2013 the Malihini is putting on its first ever annual yellowtail charter looks like we have tady lures, Phoenix rods, were still in the works to try and get  Avet, Diawa  or Penn involved. The guys from tady will be hosting a seminar in the morning on the way out, talking about the proper jig presentation retrieve and what to expect when fishing a surface And or yoyo jig. Phoenix Rod has an excellent  hybrid saltwater fishing rods line. They will be giving one of those away to a lucky angler in a raffle. Were also talking to line manufacturers in the hopes of getting them on board also H&M landing will be donating for the raffle to sweatshirts to two lucky winners to be picked up at the landing after the trip. We are trying really hard to promote this and it seems like we have a very good start with the yellowtail showing up the past three days. We will report final counts later today.

Also, the April 27 Yellowtail charter is now SOLD OUT. Thank you to everyone.

Malihini Sportfishing continues to target and catch big Yellowtail (Jack family of fish)

Hello again anglers, Owner/Captain William asked me to post for Monday’s day targeting Yellowtail and Rockcod. The Malihin landed 2 Yellowtail yesterday and broke off several. The fish are there and are very big as common this time of year with the 18-30lb “home guard” or “mossback” class fish.

The suggested setup targeting these big fish is nothing less than a 40 pound rig all the fish that we’ve caught in the past few days with the exception of two have been yo-yo iron fish. Bill says if I you guys plan on making a trip he suggests you make those reservations as soon as possible it seems like things are starting to pick up and we will be running full here. YELLOWTAIL caught this morning – Rockcod fishing in Mexico has been excellent – We need angler’s for tomorrow, Thur. Feb. 28, 2013

Malihini YELLOWTAIL Today Wednesday Feb. 27, 2013

Fresh on the water report just now from Malihini Sportfishing Captain/Owner William, the first Yellowtail was caught with the near PERFECT San Diego winter weather. Malihini has been knocking em’ out of the park lately with the Cod trips into Mexico. The fishery is looking red hot while we wait just one more day (March 1, 2013) for the Southern California Ramblin’ ROCK COD 2013 season opener. Yesterday’s Cod trip into Mexico took angler’s to landing:

18 anglers/1 boat: 4 Lingcod, 47 Reds, 129 Rockcod and of course today’s one nice YELLOWTAIL so far. Bring the Yo-Yo gear (heavy iron for deep drop and grind) Scrambled Egg, White, Green, Mackeral, pretty much anything shiny is worth a shot as well. Malihini needs anglers now for tomorrow’s trip – Bill says so far we have 5 reservations right now and need 7 to leave the dock and fill sacks with TASTY REDS (COD) or hunt for YELLOWTAIL as today we metered some nice schools. Rockcod Season Opener March 1, 2013

Hello angler’s, every year from Jan 1 to March 1, the Rockfish season is closed to fishing for anglers fishing out of Southern California fishing in USA waters. Boats CAN and CONTINUE to fish Rockcod in Mexico, a short ride from San Diego, roughly 20 miles to the fishing grounds. Be ready to pay for an additional Mexico fishing VISA that started last season. The permit rules are vague at best so please call the landing for the latest info and if the cost is included on the trip departing the day of your planned trip.

As of March first the local 1/2 and 3/4 day sportfishing fleet will resume fishing Rockcod and other groundfish critters in USA waters just a few minutes from the dock.

Here is the current rate and tackle rental for open party trips. Please call Captain Bill for your group charter. Details are below.
